Chapter 24: Under the Comet

The comet hummed over us.

I stayed sitting on the parapet.

I wasn't sure my legs would hold me if I stood.

"You can't buy me," I said.

"I know."

"Then what kind of price is that?"

"The kind I pay." He took his hands out of his pockets. "Whatever it costs. However long it takes. You say no, I keep paying anyway."

"That's a terrible business model."

"It's the only one I've got left."

I swung my boots back over the edge, onto the roof.

The tar was still warm from the day.

"Bunny's rule," I said. "Opening week."

"The show's open." He almost smiled. "I asked her at intermission. She said if I made her yard unlucky now, she'd feed me to the coyotes."

I laughed.

Then I stopped laughing, because he was looking at me.

In May I'd been running from that look.

Tonight I'd climbed forty feet in a gold dress to get to it.

"Yes," I said.

"Rox."

"Don't ask me twice. I said yes on the Fourth and I'm saying it now. Take off your jacket."

He took off his jacket.

He spread it on the tar at the foot of the comet, under all six rings.

I stood up and let him look.

The gold dress was already sliding where I'd climbed in it.

I hooked my thumbs under the straps at my shoulders and shimmied.

It dropped to my boots and I stepped out.

Under it I had on nothing but my father's ring on its chain and my father's watch.

The watch ticked against my wrist.

The air was warm, but my skin pebbled anyway.

From the hum.

From the way he looked at me, like I was the last thing he'd ever want to stop looking at.

"Your turn," I said.

He unbuttoned his shirt and let it fall.

The comet's gold light moved over his chest, his shoulders, the pink scar low on his belly.

He was breathing like he'd been holding it.

I closed the space between us and put my hand flat on his side, just over the three small healed marks.

"Still hurts?"

"Less than wanting you does."

"Good." I pushed him back a step. "Sit."

He sat on the edge of his jacket, and I knelt over him, one knee on either side of his hips.

He reached for me and I caught his wrist.

"No."

His eyes snapped to mine.

"Tonight I'm the one who gets to want things out loud," I said. "You gave me my price. Now I get to collect."

I unbuckled his belt.

I dragged his trousers down his hips with both hands.

His cock was already hard, already wet at the tip, and I took him in my hand.

He made a sound low in his chest.

"I thought about this in May," I said. "The checkbook hand. The one that came out of your pocket empty this morning."

I stroked him once, slow.

"You on top of me on that desk, on your price."

"Rox." His voice cracked.

"Don't ask me twice."

I positioned myself over him and sank down.

We both went still.
