Chapter 5: Real Ink
After I signed, nobody spoke.
The man holding the phone forgot to lower it, and the camera stayed on my face, waiting for the shout.
I capped the pen and slid one copy across the coffee table to Adeline.
She turned to the last page and read it, then checked the second copy beside it.
The color left her cheeks slowly.
"Elias," she said, "do you understand what you signed?"
"Yes."
"These aren't like the prop papers from the other years." She touched the lawyer's seal with one fingertip. "The house, the shares, the certification page. It's all real."
"That's why I signed it."
Preston stood up from my armchair.
"Okay, that's a great bit," he said. "Adeline, tell him it's over. This is going too far."
"It's a seven-day challenge," a friend said, uneasy now. "We were only having fun."
"Fun," I said.
I looked around the room.
Three years ago these people had watched Preston wear my suit and take my seat at dinner and sleep in my bed, and they had laughed and put money on how fast I'd break.
I walked to the wall of photographs and took down the nearest card.
"Fifty dollars on four minutes," I read. "Who has the fifty?"
A man near the cake slowly raised his hand.
"You lost," I said. "I'm not tearing anything up."
Nobody said anything.
I took down the next card.
"And eight minutes. That one's from last year, when I walked out at your table, and somebody put money on how long I'd sit in the car before I came back in."
