Chapter 21: The Firm

Anthony's POV

On Monday morning I carried one cardboard box out of the Brandreth firm, and nobody stopped me.

The elevator was glass.

I rode down thirty floors, watching Boston come up to meet me.

I felt lighter than I had in seven years.

My father was waiting in the lobby with his coat on.

"You don't need to do this," he said.

"I do."

"The bar committee will call me within a week." He looked at the box. "The Hollin lawyers have already withdrawn. I was going to ask you to stay and run what's left."

"I know."

"You'd be good at it."

"I'd be good at it for you," I said. "I'd like to find out what I'm like for myself."

He nodded slowly.

He held out his hand, and I looked at it.

"Be a better man than I was," he said. "It's not a hard standard."

I did not forgive him in the lobby.

But I shook his hand, and he held on longer than a handshake takes.

Neither of us said anything.

The detective phoned at noon.

"Constance Hollin was arraigned this morning," he said. "The judge refused bail. Her own lawyer didn't argue."

"And her son?"

"He resigned as chief executive on Sunday and gave a full statement."

The detective cleared his throat.
