Chapter 9: The Statement

Anthony unlocked the briefcase with his thumbs and took out a single folded sheet.

It had gone soft at the creases from being opened too many times.

"This is a signed statement," he said. "I gave it to a detective at Hollin Point on the night of the party, at eleven forty. It's dated and witnessed."

He put it on the coffee table where all of us could see.

I read the first line.

"I, Anthony Brandreth, state that Tessa Lind was with me in the Hollin kitchen from 8:30 p.m. until 9:20 p.m., when Mrs. Hollin sent her upstairs for a shawl."

My throat closed.

"Twenty minutes before she was accused," the architect said. "That's an alibi."

"It's more than that," said Anthony. "The case was empty at ten to nine. She could not have taken anything while she was in front of me, peeling pears."

"Then why didn't it free her?" the senator's son said.

"Because on Sunday morning my father sat me down in his office." His voice was flat. "He told me Constance's husband had left her the family trust. That her lawyers were our biggest client. That my statement was a suggestion, and I could change my mind or lose the firm."

"So you took it back," I said.

"In writing. I signed a second statement saying I had been mistaken about the time." He looked at the table. "That night my father put me on a plane to London for a year."
