Chapter 14: Dane on the Porch

Dane was waiting on my porch when I came down from the Stone at dusk.

He had no enforcers with him, and no coat.

He sat on the top step with his elbows on his knees and snow melting in his hair.

Tobin walked me to the gate of my yard and stopped there.

"I'll be at the window with the kettle," he said. "If he raises his voice, I'll throw it."

"Go home, Tobin."

"It's a full kettle."

I went up the path alone.

Dane stood when he saw me.

He did not step toward me, and he did not say my name the soft way he used to.

"Say it," I said. "Whatever it is."

"I'm not going to ask you to take me back."

"Good."

"I came to tell you what the cuts were." He swallowed. "I never said it, even to myself. I've been walking around the pack lands all afternoon trying to find a way to say it that makes me look better, and there isn't one."

I leaned on the porch post and waited.

"Every time Valerie came back, I wanted her to stay," he said. "And every time I wanted her to stay, I had a bond with you in the way."

"So you cut it."

"So I cut it. Then she'd leave again, and I'd feel like dirt, and I'd go to your door." His mouth twisted. "You always opened it."

"Your mother made sure I did."

"She made sure. But you opened it, Morven, and I let myself believe that meant I was a good man you'd forgiven."
