Chapter 22: Forty Years

Casey's POV

At nine in the morning the whole Brancato family stood around one hospital bed.

Salvatore sat propped on pillows with a fresh gown and his hair combed.

The gray-haired lawyer stood at his shoulder with a folder.

Renzo stood on one side of the bed and I stood beside him.

Dario came in last, shaved and white-faced, in a clean shirt.

Gianna waited in the hall.

Her father stood next to her with his hat in his hands, and neither of them looked at the other.

Adele entered alone.

She had put on a plain dark dress, and she carried her handbag in both hands.

She went straight to the bedside.

"Salvatore," she said, in a small voice. "My love. You should not be doing this on so little rest."

"Sit, Adele."

"I would rather stand."

"Then stand," he said. "Read it, Counsel."

The lawyer opened the folder.

"One. The restaurants and the trucking company pass to Renzo Brancato on the day Salvatore Brancato steps down. The ledger kept by Mrs. Brancato has been delivered to the state attorney's office, with Mr. Brancato's statement."

Adele's handbag creaked in her hands.

"Two. Dario Brancato receives the kitchen of the original restaurant and a salary. He has no stake in the company and no authority over any account."

Dario nodded slowly.

He did not look surprised, and I saw that he'd been told the night before.

"Three. Adele Brancato's signature is removed from every account. Her share of the house is held in trust for her. She will live at her sister's in Boca Raton, and she will not come within a hundred yards of her son's wife or of the child."

Adele's face went through three expressions.

"You cannot do this," she said. "I have given this family forty years."

"You gave it forty years of your own plans," Salvatore said.
