Chapter 20: The Rehearsal
Whitley had put us at the end of the table, next to the kitchen door.
The rehearsal dinner filled a private room on the mezzanine of the hotel, forty guests under a chandelier.
A waiter pushed through the swinging door every ninety seconds and clipped my chair.
I smiled at each of them.
Ten of the eleven women on the marketing director's list had said whatever they needed to say to me.
One had thrown a drink, and one had cried, and I had stayed in both chairs until they were done.
The eleventh hadn't called back.
That was a problem for another day.
Tonight there was a printed program beside my plate, cream card with gold edges.
It was a small book, and the second page held a paragraph about the couple.
"Jared and Whitley have been together since the spring before last," it read.
"Their love story began in a hotel bar in April."
Anson read it over my shoulder and went very still.
"That's fourteen months," I whispered. "And they've printed it."
