I wrote back at five past five.
"Start with the spring before last. Finish with whoever is in the room."
His answer came in a second.
"Understood."
Anson, beside me in the dark, put his mouth against my bare shoulder and did not say a word.
The ballroom was on the top floor of the hotel, white and gold, with a wall of windows on the river.
A hundred and eighty chairs had been set out in rows on either side of an aisle strewn with petals.
Whitley's four hundred roses were everywhere.
The ushers put us in the second row on the bride's side, as promised.
I wore the green dress.
Anson wore a dark suit and a plain tie, and held my hand on his knee for the whole of the processional.
The partners' wives sat three rows up in a line of expensive hats.
The partner's wife in the green wrap dress turned halfway around to look at me and gave a very small nod.
