Chapter 14: The Gym
Lucio's gym was a three-story brick building on Broad Street with a boxing ring on the top floor.
I had been inside it two hundred times.
I had watched him lift and spar and dance around with his shirt off while the trainers pretended not to look at his future wife.
At two in the morning it was dark and empty.
I stood alone in the middle of the ring, in my father's black coat, with a flip phone in my hand.
Santino had bought it at an all-night drugstore.
I had typed one message to the number I knew by heart.
I'm alive. I have the book. Come alone.
He came in ten minutes.
The elevator dinged, the doors slid open, and Lucio stepped out in an overcoat, with his hair mussed and his face white.
He had a pistol in his right hand and he didn't hide it.
"Livia," he said.
His voice cracked.
"Thank God. I thought you were dead. I saw you in the alley and I thought I was losing my mind."
