Chapter 16: What Jessamy Heard

Jessamy sat on the edge of the stripped bed with her bandaged hands in her lap and listened to her husband pound on the door.

It was past midnight.

He had been coming and going all day, begging through the wood, and she had sent him away every time.

Tonight he sounded drunk.

She waited until the pounding turned to a slow, helpless thudding, and then she told the guard outside to open it.

Dalton fell in.

His face was a ruin and he smelled like a bar floor, and he stood swaying in the middle of the room that had been Rosalind's.

"Jess," he said. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Sit down before you fall."

He dropped into the armchair by the cold fireplace.

She poured water into a glass and held it to his mouth with her wrist, because her palms still blistered when she bent them.

He drank.

"I want to understand something," she said, in the warm voice she had used on the first night, the one that cost her nothing. "The Goddess marked you for me. I'm your mate. Why did your wolf die when she walked away from you?"

"I told you. I don't know."

"You do know. You've known since the Stone."

His eyes slid away from hers.

"You looked at the way she held your hand in the yard," Jessamy said. "You looked at it the way a man looks at a wound he doesn't want to see."
