Chapter 10: The Audit
At nine on Tuesday morning, Cassidy put a photograph of the fourteenth-floor kitchen on the conference room screen.
It was dark and a little blurry, and two shapes stood very close together in front of the fridge.
The whole floor had been called in, and the HR director sat at the end of the table with a legal pad.
"This is a conduct review," said Cassidy, in her acting-team-lead voice. "I'm sorry to do this in front of everyone, but transparency is important to me."
"What am I looking at?" said the HR director.
"After-hours fraternization in a shared space. Misuse of a company fridge. An open tin of caviar."
Somebody at the back whispered, "Which tin?"
"Five," said the intern, who had been reading the ledger.
Cassidy clicked to the next slide.
It was a second photograph, only slightly clearer.
One of the shapes was sitting on the counter.
The room went quiet.
I looked at Killian.
He had set his mug down on the table and was looking at his hands.
I stood up.
"May I respond?"
"Althea, you don't have to," said the HR director.
"I'd like to enter a record."
I opened the green ledger to the last page, and I read it out in the voice I use for invoices.
"Monday, nine-oh-seven p.m. One kitchen. One counter. One tie, pulled by me."
Nobody coughed.
"One blouse, with two buttons opened by Mr. Pembroke and a third by me. One thigh, his, between mine. One bottom lip, mine, in his teeth."
