Chapter 20: The Q4 Party
I came in from the bar with a seltzer and saw Cassidy's hand on the lid.
The floor was in a half circle around her, holding plastic cups, with the banner behind her head.
Killian was by the doorway.
He caught my eye and shook his head once: he had not given her the tin.
"This tin has been in the fridge for nine days," said Cassidy, in her best acting-team-lead voice. "Under Policy 2b, a label expires after three."
"Cass," said one of the sales guys. "Come on."
"It's communal. It's been communal since Monday. And the label says it's the whole thing, so I thought the floor should see what the whole thing is."
"Hands off," I said.
She turned.
I walked down the middle of the half circle with my seltzer in one hand, and nobody breathed.
"That's my line," I said. "I wrote it on my lunch bag, and I drew a crown."
"Policy 2b," said Cassidy.
"Policy 2b passed eleven to two."
"By a vote."
"By eleven people who owed you something," I said.
It was very quiet.
Cassidy's smile stayed up, but it went stiff at the corners.
"I don't know what you mean."
I turned to the intern.
"You have a sticky note in your pocket," I said.
"Me?"
"You."
She took it out, and her hand was shaking.
"You don't have to," I said.
"I know." She cleared her throat and read it. "'Cass fixed a fourteen-thousand-dollar typo on my invoice last April. I voted for the fridge rule because she asked.'"
"Come on," said Cassidy to her, very low.
