I caught Killian in the stairwell between sixteen and fifteen, still holding the bowl of ice.

The two sealed tins were sweating against my shirt.

"What do I owe her?" I said.

He stopped on the landing with his folder.

"Nothing. You don't owe her anything."

"She said you know what I owe her. Say it."

"It's not what you owe," said Killian. "It's what I owe."

"That's the card. That's the sentence from Tuesday."

"I know."

"You have until the next floor."

"Althea."

"I'm serious."

I went down one step, and he came down with me.

"It's a long thing," he said. "If I give it to you all at once, you'll hate it, and you'll hate me. I think I'd rather you hate it a piece at a time."

I looked at him.

He did not look away, which was different from every other day for two years.

"A piece at a time," I said.

"One piece for every lunch, if you want them that way."

"Installments."

"Your rules. No lump sums."

I thought it over.

"Fine. Piece one. Start now."

He took a breath.

"I knew from the first day," he said. "I could have ended it with one sentence."

"Which sentence?"

"That's Althea's."

"That's all of it?"

"That's all of it. I've had it in my mouth for two years."

"Give me the day."

"The Monday after Dennis packed his desk."
