Chapter 14: The Chair

Camille's POV

The boardroom at seven in the morning smelled of burnt coffee and wet wool.

Eleven directors sat around the long table with their phones face down.

Behind them, along the glass wall, stood three reporters and one camera, which I had invited myself.

I had not slept.

I had not changed out of the gray coat either, and I wanted every one of them to see that.

The board chair cleared his throat.

"Camille, this is highly irregular. If this is about the family's private..."

"It isn't private," I said. "It stopped being private when two hundred people watched me do it."

He sat back.

I looked down the table at men who had followed my orders for six years.

Not one of them had ever seen me ask a question I did not already know the answer to.

"At our founders' gala last week, my head of security gave away something that was his," I said. "I ordered him to. I did it in front of the room, and I did not look at him afterward."

The camera light came on.

"His name is Nolan Culligan. He was also my fiancé for two years."

Nobody moved.

"He came here the next morning and resigned. I told this board he had nothing. I told him that to his face, with all of you listening."

I made myself keep my chin up.

"I was wrong. He had the one thing I couldn't buy, and I treated it like a pen I could borrow."

A director down the table gave a short laugh.

"For a bodyguard?" he said. "Camille. Our biggest customer pulls its contract Friday."

"Then it pulls it."

"You can't mean you're stepping down over a man who..."

"I mean it exactly."

I took the chair's gavel out of its box and set it on the table in front of him.
