Chapter 20: Where to Stand

Alana spread her plan across the study desk on the back of a gala seating chart.

She had drawn it in three colors of marker, and it looked worse than it was.

"The memorial gala is in the old shipping hall," she said. "Two hundred guests, a stage, a podium with a microphone. Dalton gives the toast at nine."

"And?" Camille said.

She was dressed again, in dark trousers and a white shirt, and she stood at my shoulder with her arms folded.

She had not touched me since the porch.

I could feel her not touching me, in the careful half inch of air between our sleeves.

"And I'm in the sound booth." Alana tapped a red X. "I patch my phone into the hall system. When he starts, I play him. Every word he said to Nolan upstairs, to two hundred people, in his own voice."

"He'll deny it," I said.

"He can deny it all he wants. They'll hear the part where he says he can't eat." She looked at Camille. "Then comes the hard bit."

"Me," Camille said.

"You. And me. We're at the front table, and we don't move."

"Alana..."

"He'll go down, Cam. He'll fall off the podium and gasp for us, the way he always does. And we sit with our hands in our laps and let the room watch."

Camille's jaw worked.

"He's fifteen years of my life," she said. "Whatever he is, I remember teaching him to swim."
