Chapter 19: The Blue Shirt
Brent's POV
I was in the lobby of the fertility clinic at seven forty on Wednesday morning, an hour before it opened.
The cleaner let me in because she recognized me from the video.
I sat on a gray chair under a poster of a smiling couple and waited for the director.
She arrived at eight-fifteen and saw me from the hallway.
"Mr. Garner. I can't discuss your wife's file with you."
"I'm not asking you to. I'm asking you to hold a review."
She stopped.
I handed her the folder I had put together at the motel at three in the morning.
Fourteen pages from the pharmacy that I'd begged off the deputy, with the forged signatures marked in yellow.
A photograph of thirty-one sealed boxes.
My mother's canceled checks, copied at a print shop.
"Lacey Dunbar has volunteered here for five years," I said. "She runs the Thursday support group. She told my wife which clinic to pick. She brought nine women through your doors."
"She's one of our best volunteers."
"She is."
The director read the first page, then the second.
I watched her lose the color in her face.
"I can't convene this without Mrs. Garner's consent," she said at last. "It's her chart."
"Then call her tonight and ask. She might say no."
"And if she says yes?"
"The support group meets Thursday at ten," I said. "Every one of those women trusts Lacey. I think they should see this with their own eyes. I don't want it to happen in some office where she can cry at a lawyer."
She was quiet for a while.
"You want her to walk into a room of women who adore her."
