Chapter 8: The Padlock

I told Davis in the truck, in a low voice, one sentence at a time.

He listened with both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road.

When I finished, he pulled over beside a gas station and turned off the engine.

"Fourteen months," he said.

"Yes."

"And she did every shot."

"Every one."

His knuckles were white on the wheel.

"I wasn't going to say this," he said. "Last spring, I picked up a sample order from Hollin Court. There was a second refrigerator in her garage. It had a padlock on it."

"A padlock on a refrigerator."

"I figured it was wine."

We sat there while a pickup filled its tank beside us.

"She's at the committee brunch until noon," I said. "Brent's there too. They're doing the table plans for tomorrow's reveal."

"How do you know?"

"She posted a picture. She was holding a mimosa."

Davis looked at me for a long moment.

"You want to go in."

"I have a key. She gave it to me two years ago, so I could water her ferns."

"That's still her house."

"I know."

"If you get caught, she'll call the police and say you broke in."

"I know."

He started the truck again.

"I'll wait at the end of the street," he said. "If anyone comes, I'll lean on the horn."

"You don't have to."

"Elise." He glanced at me. "I do."

Hollin Court was quiet at ten in the morning.

I walked up the side path with my hood up, past the black shutters and the kitchen window.
