Chapter 11: What He Kept

Dean looked from Miles to me, and then he walked away down the gravel road without his jacket.

Neither of us stopped him.

The tide was still out, and the mud under the pier smelled of salt and weed.

Miles stood with his hands loose at his sides and didn't look at me.

"Six times," I said.

"Seven, counting today."

"Why?"

He rubbed his jaw with one hand.

"Eight weeks ago," he said, "Brooke's account posted a photo of a ferry deck. You could read the number on the stern."

I remembered the photo. I had sent it to my father with a joke about the coffee.

"I looked up the number," Miles said. "The boat was a harbor ferry. I came down here to see who rode it."

"You wanted to find the girl."

"I wanted to find the girl who wrote the thing about the onions."

I held on to the rail.

"I saw you on the third trip," he said quietly. "You were at the stern with a thermos and a knife roll, laughing at something the deckhand said. You had the scar on your left thumb. I knew it from the hands photo."

"You saw me. Before you ever met Brooke."

"Yes."

"And you didn't say anything."

"I'd been writing to a woman for two years who said she was shy and hated her face." He looked at the water. "I thought if I walked up to the real one and said I read your messages, you might run."

"So you waited."
