Chapter 6: Two Blue Dresses

I wore green to the yacht club, because it was the one thing in my closet that wasn't blue.

My father wore his old captain's jacket and carried a cane he didn't need.

"If she says one word about your mother," Dad said in the car, "I'll put her in the harbor."

"She won't say anything about Mom."

"Good. It's a long swim."

The club's main room was white and gold, with forty tables set and a screen above the stage that played slides of sailboats.

Miles stood at the door in the grey jacket.

He saw me and stopped talking to a man beside him.

"You're not in blue," he said.

"I own exactly one dress that isn't. It's the one I'm wearing."

His eyes went down and came back up slowly.

"It's the right one," he said.

Dad cleared his throat.

"Dad, this is Miles Radford. Miles, my father, Max."

Miles held out his hand, and my father looked at it for a long second.

"You're the boat man," Dad said.

"Yes, sir."

"I took a picture of my daughter on my dock once. I hear it's been getting around."

Miles's mouth went tight at the corners.

"I'm sorry about that, sir."

"Not your fault. Sit by me."

Brooke came across the room a minute later.

She was wearing the blue dress, with my silver earrings, and her hair pinned up the way I wore mine.

She had her phone in her hand, and a friend with a camera followed two steps behind.

"Leah." Her eyes were already shining. "Oh, you came. Thank you."
