Chapter 9: The Car
I took the stairs at St. Brigid's because I couldn't make myself stand in the elevator.
The hospital smelled the same as the last time.
Floor wax, hand gel and a warm, sweet note of something cooking in a cafeteria three floors down.
My legs knew the hallway before I did.
I stopped outside room 412 with my hand flat against the wall.
In my first life the last thing I saw was a ceiling like this one.
A nurse had been saying my name very fast.
"Ma'am?"
A nurse stood beside me with a clipboard.
"Are you all right?"
"I'm here for Brooke Tanner."
"The overdose?" She lowered her voice. "She's fine, she's been awake since six. She walked in on her own at five-thirty and asked us to hold her phone for her while we worked."
"She asked for her phone first?"
"Right away." The nurse frowned. "People usually ask for water."
I went in.
Brooke lay propped on three pillows with an IV in her arm and her hair brushed.
Her phone was on the tray table, leaned against a cup, with the camera light on.
"Leah," she said, in a thin, small voice. "You came."
"I came to see how you're doing."
"They told me I almost died." Her eyes filled. "Because of what you did."
The red dot on the phone blinked at me.
I walked to the tray table and turned the phone face down.
"Brooke, you don't have to perform for me." I said it quietly. "I knew you for ten years. You've never taken more pills than the label says in your life. You walked in at five-thirty and asked for your phone."
