Chapter 18: Eleven Boxes

Dennis Tidwell ate three slices of roast and no vegetables.

He sat at the head of Margot's table with a napkin tucked into his collar.

Stanley sat across from him. Tristan and I sat side by side, not touching, with our hands under the tablecloth.

Margot passed the potatoes.

"I'll say it once," Dennis said, chewing. "I've known about the two of you since last Christmas."

My fork stopped.

"Your mother handed me a plate of ham, and she said, 'My son and his wife.' She pointed at him, and then at you across the room."

"Margot," Tristan said.

"I thought you'd told him," Margot said, with great calm. "Everybody else knew."

"Half the golf club knew," Dennis said. "Your uncle told them. I waited for one of you to walk into my office and say it."

"You waited ten months?" I said.

"I wanted to see if you'd say it. I like to know who I'm promoting." He looked at me. "You didn't want my help, and you didn't use my golf game. You asked about my knee because you wanted to know about my knee."

"I wanted the promotion."

"You also wanted to know about my knee. Both can be true." He buttered a roll. "The tip didn't come from me. I'd have been less polite."

"Who sent it?" Tristan said.

"I have some ideas. Wednesday, ten o'clock, HR's conference room. I'd like both of you to come in and tell me, in your own words, what happened. Not one of you. Both."

Tristan put down his fork and looked at me.

I looked at him.

"Both," we said.

"Good," Dennis said. "I already wrote 'both' on the agenda."

Then Margot stood up, clapped once, and said, "Boxes."
