Chapter 30: Thanksgiving at the Rink
I stepped into the empty equipment room to hear the prosecutor.
"What kind of deal?" I asked.
"He will admit to the images and the false report if we drop the remaining counts."
"Has the best man agreed to testify?"
"He already has. You don't have to decide tonight."
I looked through the open door at the Cup trophy in Joel's hands.
"Tell me when Grayson has to say it himself," I said.
On Thanksgiving morning, we carried tables onto the rink floor.
Joel covered them with paper and brought out the old folding chairs.
Toni's son drew tiny skates beside each place setting.
He put a much larger pair beside Joel's name.
"Accurate," Joel said when he saw it.
"I had to use both markers," the boy told him.
My mother arrived in a plain coat with potatoes, a peeler, and no staff.
Toni pointed her toward the snack bar sink.
