Chapter 10: Tie

I did not finish packing.

I got as far as the second sweater.

Then I put the suitcase down and went out in my blue dress and crossed the dark lawn.

I climbed the hundred stairs.

If I was going to be thrown out, I was going to hear him say it.

The office door was open.

He was standing at the dark window with his back to me and his jacket on the floor.

"I heard you," I said.

He did not turn around.

"Say it to my face, then. Tell me what I am to you."

"Chloe."

"I came to say goodbye."

He turned.

His face was gray and drawn, and his eyes were not gold.

They were just dark, and tired, and old.

"Don't go," he said.

"You didn't say no to her."

"I said no a hundred times in my head."

"I said I know because it's true. I know what I am.

"A dragon who loves something holds on too tight. It's in the blood. It burns what it keeps."

"I'm not something you keep."

"I know." He took one step toward me.

"I'm trying to tell you I'm afraid."

I looked at the tie around his neck.
