"The courtyard," Matt said.
"He has to get outside, now, or he'll take out the whole dorm."
Mr. Hunter was already moving.
He went down the corridor, one hand on the wall.
His fingers left scorched prints in the plaster.
Students scattered ahead of him.
Chris grabbed my hand.
"Stay behind me."
"Not a chance," I said, and ran.
We came out into the stone courtyard behind Lantern House just as the sun cleared the roof.
Half the school had already gathered on the steps and in the windows.
I saw the girl from the arch with her hand over her mouth.
I saw a teacher holding a fire extinguisher, and a very bored boy filming on his phone.
Mr. Hunter stood in the middle of the flagstones with his head thrown back.
His shirt was gone.
Black scales rippled up his arms and over his chest and across his face in waves.
