I watched Kelsey's apology from a folding chair behind her phone, because she had left a text asking me not to and I had decided to go.
She sat on the floor of a friend's bare spare room in a gray sweatshirt, with no ring light and no makeup.
The phone leaned against a stack of books.
Daniel waited in the car downstairs.
At eight o'clock she pressed the red button, and the count in the corner began to climb.
Two hundred, then four thousand.
By the time she spoke, there were sixty thousand people watching.
"Hi," Kelsey said. "I'm not going to say loves. I don't have a code, and I'm not selling anything."
Her voice shook.
"My name is Kelsey Kittredge. I was the one holding the phone at Thanksgiving, and I've kept the footage for four months without deleting it."
She looked straight into the lens.
"That's what I did. I'm not going to say I was caught off guard, or that it was a family joke. I filmed my sister-in-law being humiliated because it made good content."
The chat scrolled fast.
She kept going.
"For three years, Susannah paid me thirty-eight thousand dollars a month to say I loved her app. I never once said thank you to her. I let my mother talk about her like staff."
She took a breath.
"A month ago I found out something about my mother in a video from a gala, the same as everyone else. She was a housemaid before she married my father."
Her chin trembled and held.
"I want to say this clearly. I am not ashamed of that. People who clean other people's houses are not what's wrong with this story."
