Chapter 4: VP of Nothing

Brodie came through the revolving door of our Stamford headquarters at nine on Tuesday morning with a coffee in each hand.

He was smiling, which was what he did when he planned to be forgiven.

Forty employees were scattered across the lobby with their badges on lanyards, because I had asked the front desk to hold an all-hands in the atrium at nine.

He saw them and the smile slipped.

"Sukey," he said. "What's all this?"

"This is your workplace," I said. "I thought you'd like to see it."

He set one coffee on the reception desk and held the other out to me.

"I got you the oat latte. I know you didn't sleep."

I did not take it.

Daniel stood a few feet behind my left shoulder with a folder under his arm.

He had said nothing on the drive over except one sentence: "I'll stay out of it unless you tell me different."

I held up the manila envelope from Esther's sideboard.

"Do you know what this is?"

Brodie looked at it for a long second.

"It's the house thing. I told you. It's boring."

"Read paragraph two out loud."

"Sukey."

"You said it was boring. Read it to everyone here, and I'll let them decide."

His eyes went around the atrium.

Nobody looked away.

"I don't have my glasses."

I read it for him.

"The undersigned assigns all voting rights in Pathlight Incorporated, held in her name, to the trustee of the Kittredge Family Trust, being Esther Kittredge, for a term of ninety-nine years."

A woman from accounting said, "Oh my God," into her hand.

Brodie set the second coffee down very carefully.

"It's a tax structure, for the house. Mom's lawyer put it together. It doesn't change anything about the company."
