Chapter 20: The Envelope
Tuesday was the first day of real classes, and the dining hall at lunch smelled of boiled carrots.
Lottie and I had found a table by the window.
She had propped her phone against the napkin holder, screen down, and she kept her hand near it.
"Don't look at it," she said. "It's looking at nothing. It's just very interested in the table."
"Is that a bit?"
"It's a precaution." She tore a roll in half. "I'm a person who notices phones, and I have decided to be a person who uses one."
I was laughing when a shadow fell across the tray.
Marilyn stood at the end of the table in a gray coat, with her purse held in front of her in both hands.
She had not slept.
It showed in the skin under her eyes, which her makeup could not quite reach.
"May I sit?" she said.
"No," Lottie said.
"Lottie," I said.
"I'll be a good sentry." Lottie put the roll down. "I'll sit here and look like furniture."
Marilyn did not take the chair.
She stood, and she lowered her voice.
"I will be brief. I know how this looks to you. I'd like to make it simpler."
She opened her purse and laid an envelope on the table between my tray and Lottie's.
It was thick, and the flap was tucked in.
"There is a cashier's check inside," she said. "It will cover four years at any school you choose, here or anywhere else in the country. Housing included. Books, and a stipend."
"Why?"
"Because you deserve something for what I did, and I would like it to be money rather than a hearing."
She said it evenly, and I could tell she had practiced.
