Chapter 17: Bram's POV: The Only Thing That Works

Bram's POV

My father laid the plan out on the infirmary table with three salt shakers and a knife.

"The hall seats four hundred," he said. "We cancel the ceremony. Clear the valley by dusk. Let Harlan burn an empty building."

"And then?" I said.

"And then he burns the next one."

The elder with the cane thumped it on the floor.

"He wants a crowd. He'll hunt us room by room until he gets one."

"Then we give him a crowd," Rosalind said.

She stood at the foot of her father's cot with the mark on her shoulder showing above her borrowed shirt.

I had not stopped looking at it for an hour.

"No," I said.

"Hear me out."

"No."

"Bram." She did not raise her voice. "Harlan chained the doors from outside because he's sure we'll be inside. He's sure because Linnet told him the ceremony is a pack law and the Alpha's son has never missed one. So we hold it."

"With you standing in the middle of it."

"With the pack on the benches, and the jars filled with water, and the fighters in the cellar and behind the chains."

"And you at the front."

"Yes."

I put both hands flat on the table because I didn't trust them.

I had run through every way I could keep her out of that hall, and each one ended with me carrying her over my shoulder to the next valley while she kicked.

I would have done it.

"He's coming for your mother," I said, "and for you. Linnet is coming for me. If you're standing in the front of that room, I have every one of them in one place, and that's the only thing I like about it."
