Chapter 4: The Missing Hundred and Forty

I did my first therapy session at seven the next morning, and by ten I was in the Carrow Group lobby on one crutch and one cane.

Hannah had driven me.

She stood by the security desk with her arms folded, still in her clinic scrubs.

"Five minutes," she said. "You get your things and you leave."

"My grandfather's desk set is up there. His pen. His tide book."

"Then get the pen."

The fifth floor was the operations floor, forty desks in open rows.

It went quiet as I came out of the elevator.

I had worked there seven years.

I knew every name on that floor, every kid's birthday, who liked their coffee scalding.

Nobody said hello.

I made it halfway to my desk before Lyle's door opened.

He came out of the corner office, the one that had been my grandfather's, with a stack of printouts in his hand.

"Everyone, can I have your attention?" he said.

He didn't need to ask.

"Most of you know Tobias was in an accident. I'm glad he's on his feet." He turned to me. "I'm sorry to do this here, brother. I'd hoped to handle it privately, but you've left me no choice."

"Do what?"

"Last Thursday, one hundred and forty thousand dollars left the vendor payments account," Lyle said. "It went to an account opened in your name three weeks ago."

The floor made a sound.

I stood with the cane in my hand.

"I didn't open any account."

"The transfer came from your login, Tobias. Your credentials, your approval code." He held up the printout so the back row could see the highlighting. "This company has been in your family for three generations. I gave you work when I could have let you go."
