Chapter 16: The Boy

Lachlan's POV

The boy looked at me, and I forgot how to stand.

His eyes were mine. They were my grandfather's, and my mother's, and the ones I shaved around every morning.

Imogen's arms tightened around him.

"Everyone out," I said to the floor.

Forty people left without a sound.

An older woman in a knitted cardigan came forward and held out her arms, and Imogen passed him to her.

"Juice," the woman said to the boy. "Down the hall, with me."

"Is that man a giant?" Rory asked her, loudly.

The door closed on his voice.

I walked to my office with Imogen behind me and did not trust myself to speak until the door was shut.

I crossed to the vault in the wall.

For three years it had held only the things I could not throw away.

I took out a gray folder and put it on the desk between us.

"My lawyer went to a hospital in Chicago," I said. "He came back with a date. Read it."

She did not touch the folder.

"I know the date," she said. "I was there."

"The boy was born five months after the day you signed."

"Lachlan..."

"Five months." My voice came out low and level, which frightened me. "He was already in you. You were already carrying him when you put your name on those pages."

"He is Ansel's son."

"Ansel Brooks met you after you got off the plane." I put my finger on the folder. "I have the dates. He could not have been in Chicago in time. Whoever the father is, you were with him in our house."

Her mouth opened, and closed.

"Don't," I said. "He has my eyes. He has my grandfather's ears. The lawyer wrote 'Brooks,' and I wanted it to be true so badly that I never counted."
