Chapter 12: The Visitor
My father was sitting up when we got back to the ICU.
He had his reading glasses on, and a nurse had propped a cup of ice chips on his tray.
"There he is," he said, and looked at Penelope. "And who is this?"
"Penelope Ambrose," she said. "I helped with your son's hand."
"An Ambrose? Like the old studio?"
She went still.
"Yes, sir," she said.
"Good," my father said. "Somebody in this city should have manners. Sit down, young lady."
Penelope laughed, and then looked away fast.
I pulled a chair to the bed.
"Dad, I need to ask you something."
"You look like you haven't slept."
"What visitors did you have the night before the crowd came?"
He thought about it.
The monitor ticked.
"A young woman," he said. "Dark hair. She came in around nine with a scarf over her head. I thought she was one of the nurses' friends."
"Did she give a name?"
"She said she was a friend of yours." He frowned. "She sat with me an hour. She held my hand."
I could not feel my fingers.
"What did she say?"
"She said she was sorry for everything that was about to happen." He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. "I thought she meant the sickness. She was crying so hard I patted her hand."
"Dad."
"What?"
"That was Sonia."
He stared at me for a long time.
"No," he said. "She had a different face."
"She's an actress."
"She asked how many people were allowed in the room," he said, slowly. "I told her two at a time. She laughed and said that was a pity."
