Chapter 15: The Transfers

Nathan's POV

Danielle put her phone on my desk at seven the next morning, before I had taken my coat off.

"Look at that and tell me I'm wrong," she said.

The photograph was dark and grainy. A loading dock, a truck, a man with a tablet.

I knew the man from the angle of his shoulders.

"That's Darius," I said. "Where?"

"The Danforth warehouse on the canal. Midnight. He was loading racks."

I enlarged the picture with two fingers.

The tall black cases had the Danforth logo on the side, and I had signed the purchase order for every one of them.

"Those hold the routing engine," I said. "Every client contract Danforth has runs through those racks. Without them, nothing works."

"Then why is he sending them out?"

I sat down slowly.

"Because someone is about to sell what's left," I said. "And whoever owns the racks owns the only part of the company worth buying."

Danielle did not say anything for a moment.

"Can we prove it?" she said.

"Not with a picture. He'll say he's moving them for repairs." I rubbed my eyes. "I'd need the transfer logs and who signed them. I don't have a login anymore."

"Claire does."

"Claire won't listen to us."

"Then we find paper first," Danielle said. "And we wait until it's something she can't wave off."

She stood in my doorway, tall and straight in her charcoal dress, and I noticed that I felt steadier with her there than I had in five years.

I put that thought away, because she was my boss and had a rule.

By ten the news had caught up with us.

The board of Danforth Systems had met on Wednesday afternoon, an hour after the funeral. The article said the vote was unanimous.
