Chapter 21: The Auction

Claire spread her papers across the boardroom table with shaking hands.

"Darius moved the racks to a company called Harbor Line Holdings," she said. "Eleven pallets, three nights. I found the transfer logs on the shared drive."

"Did he sign them?" I asked.

"His login did. I can't prove it was him typing." She looked up, and she was looking at the table, not at me. "I don't know who owns Harbor Line."

"I do," Danielle said.

She slid her phone across the table.

It showed the grainy photograph from the loading dock.

Claire stared at it for a long time.

"I want to stop the sale," she said.

"If you stop it, he disappears with the racks," Danielle said. "Let him bid. Let him stand up in front of the buyers and say his own name."

Claire's jaw tightened.

Then she nodded.

The auction was held on Friday morning in a hotel ballroom, with two hundred folding chairs and a podium.

I had last stood in a ballroom like it when I put the divorce papers in front of my wife.

Claire sat in the front row, in black, with her folder on her knees.

She did not look at me.

Darius stood at the back by the coffee urn in a new suit, with a paddle in his hand marked with the number twelve.

He saw Claire and gave her a sad, supportive little nod.

Danielle took the seat beside me, with a paddle marked seven.

"Lot one," the auctioneer said. "The Danforth routing engine and its client contracts. Opening at two million."

"Two million," said a man near the front.

"Two and a half." Darius raised his paddle, lazily.
