Chapter 12: Sabina Reads the Statement

Sabina's POV

The board of the Hope Harbor Foundation met in the old rectory dining room, around a table that had once held Sunday dinners for priests.

There were nine members, and I had served all of them coffee.

A dentist, a car dealer, two retired teachers, a woman who owned three dry cleaners, a lawyer's wife, a pastor's widow, and two men whose business I had never been told.

They sat with their notepads squared in front of them, and not one of them looked at me.

Bernadette sat at the head with her hands folded.

"Thank you for coming on short notice," she said. "This will not take long."

I sat in the chair by the wall with the minutes book on my knee.

My phone was in my coat, in the hall.

Bernadette had asked everyone to leave phones outside, for privacy.

Cass would be counting the minutes.

Rule two said somebody had to know where I was, and somebody did, and it did me no good at all.

"We have all seen the video," Bernadette said. "I won't pretend it was pleasant. A young woman I once cared for stood up at our gala and said hurtful things about this house."

"Untrue things," said the car dealer.

"Things that may feel true to her," Bernadette said gently. "I don't doubt her pain. But I do have a duty to the girls in my care, and to this board. So I'd like a vote tonight on a simple order: that Delphine Mazur be barred from the Foundation's premises and events, and that the Foundation's counsel be authorized to act if she persists."
