Chapter 13: Whiskey at the Marina

Dell's POV

"No what?" I said.

Sabina's mouth was open, and nothing else came out of it.

Her eyes went to the head of the table, and I watched them go.

I watched her wait for permission.

"Sabina is overwrought," Bernadette said, rising, calm as a cathedral. "She has carried a heavy memory for eleven years, and you have come into a private meeting to put her on trial."

"I asked her a question."

"And she answered. No, she will not be cross-examined in front of strangers." Bernadette looked at the man behind me. "Please escort Ms. Mazur out."

"Sabina," Cass said, from the hall. "Say it. Whatever it is."

Sabina looked at Cass, and her whole face broke open for a second.

Then she closed her mouth.

She sat down.

She put the statement back in its folder and squared the edges.

The man from the front desk put a hand on my arm, and I let him.

"Pick one," I said to Sabina.

She did not look up.

I walked out of the Hope Harbor Foundation for the second time in my life.

Cass followed me down the steps, calling my name, and I kept walking.

I drove without deciding where.

By nine at night I was at the end of Dock Road, parked in front of a gray shed with a single yellow light burning above the office door.

I sat in my car, and I thought about the word no.

She had said it.

She had said no to the question, you saw me?, and then she had folded her hands and let Bernadette carry her away.

That was what she had always done.

She had a way of going quiet and letting the strongest person in the room decide.
