Cass's POV
Bernadette Gorski took the stand at two o'clock and said the words "on advice of counsel" over and over in fifty minutes.
I filmed every one.
She wore the navy blazer and the gold medal.
She answered the first four questions, about her name, address and role, in a calm, pleasant voice.
On the fifth, which was about the Kelleys Island house, she folded her hands and said, "I decline to answer on advice of counsel."
The judge, whose face never moved, said, "Noted."
By the thirtieth, the whole gallery was laughing under its breath.
At four o'clock the judge cleared her throat.
"I find the risk to the current residents sufficient to warrant interim protective placement," she said. "Six of the fourteen, those named on the transfer list in Exhibit F, are released tonight to a licensed agency. The agency has certified the premises at Gorski Marina."
I put down my phone.
Beside me, Dell squeezed my arm so hard that it hurt.
