Stefan's POV
The legal aid lawyer had told me the affidavit did not require my mother to be in the room.
She had also told me that if I wanted to do it in front of her, no one would stop me.
I chose the second.
The notary's office was on the first floor of the courthouse, a narrow room with a flag and a desk.
I arrived at nine in my father's black suit, which pulled across the shoulders.
Dell sat on a bench in the hall outside.
She had not asked to come.
She had simply been there, with two coffees, and handed me one without a word.
"You don't have to go in," she said.
"I do."
"I know. I'm saying you don't have to do it perfectly."
At nine-twenty my mother arrived with her lawyer, a gray man in a gray coat.
She had been summoned to produce documents, and it was a coincidence of scheduling that the same hour was set for mine.
I had not arranged the coincidence.
