Chapter 11: Fully Charged
Pia came at dawn with a little black wand and a bag over her shoulder.
She swept the house room by room without saying a word.
In the guest room she pulled the towel off the smoke detector, unscrewed the plate, and held up a tiny lens on a wire.
"Battery camera," she said. "Wi-Fi. It pushes to a tablet."
"Whose tablet?" Keith asked.
"I'd guess the one with a bald man holding it." She looked at me. "I'm not supposed to tell you that. I'm also not supposed to like you, but I do."
She found a second camera in the living room clock.
She left it in place on purpose.
"Let them watch you sit on a couch," she said. "It's very boring."
Keith turned the cracked phone over in his hand.
"Do you have a charger for this?"
Pia looked at it and winced.
"That's a lot of years ago." She dug in her bag and came up with a gray cable from the bottom. "I keep everything. You'd be shocked what turns out to be useful."
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't thank me." She put it in my hand and closed my fingers over it. "Just don't let them see your face when it turns on."
We plugged the phone in and hid it under a pile of sweaters.
There was filming all day.
That afternoon the host sat us on the couch and asked each of us questions separately, on camera, while the other one waited in the kitchen.
I answered in the voice Ashton wanted.
I said I was still hurting, and I said I was learning to be on my own.
