Chapter 18: Dead Air
The producer's office was on the fourth floor of the studio, with a window onto the parking lot and a framed poster of the first season.
I had never been inside it.
He sat behind a glass desk, and Ashton sat on the sofa under the poster, grey-faced, with his manager standing at his shoulder.
The brunch clip had been online for ninety minutes.
"Seven million," the producer said, and turned his monitor around.
Under the video were the words Vera Maddock card declined, and a hundred thousand comments, and a gif of her face.
"This is the best thing that has happened to this show," he said. "Do you understand? You gave us a plot."
Nobody in the room looked happy about it.
Vera wasn't there.
She had left the hotel in the first car, and she had not answered Keith's calls.
Keith stood against the wall beside me with his arms folded.
He had not touched me since the elevator.
The producer leaned forward.
"Here is where we are," he said. "The finale goes out live on Saturday. A theater, a studio audience, six million at home before we even start. And we have a hole."
"What hole?" I said.
"The ending. At the moment the ending is Vera crying over a credit card." He spread his hands. "People are sympathetic to the wrong person."
Ashton laughed without any sound.
"I'm not the wrong person."
"You're broke," the manager said.
He said it very quietly, to the room, and Ashton's jaw clenched.
"There's a payout on the finale," the manager went on. "Two million dollars from the network if the ratings hit. He needs it. We all do."
