Chapter 6: House Rules

"No," Keith said.

He said it to the ceiling, to the producer in his own earpiece, and he said it flat.

"Keith," said the director, "that was the best thirty seconds we've shot all week."

"Then you have it." He took a step back from me. "We're done for the morning."

He walked out of the kitchen and out the back door, and the screen door banged behind him.

The crew broke for lunch.

Pia found me standing at the island and put a cold bottle of water in my hand.

"Breathe," she said. "You haven't done it in an hour."

"I'm fine."

"You're a terrible liar." She took the earpiece out of my ear with two fingers. "Everybody on this show is a terrible liar. It's the only reason I have a job."

I laughed at that, shakily.

When the last cable was coiled and the van pulled out, I found Keith on the back patio.

He sat on a low stone wall above the city with his elbows on his knees.

The hills below him were brown and gold and the sun was very bright.

"I need to set some rules," he said, without looking up.

"Okay."

"We keep the cameras happy. That's what I signed for, and it's what you signed for." He turned his wedding ring with his thumb. "When they need us to touch, we touch. When they don't, we don't."

"Fine."

"We don't talk about that summer. Not here and not on air."
