Chapter 13: Gurule
Eloy took eight days to write one text to Nestor Gurule.
It said: "Your altimeter is in Adelina's hangar. Come and get it. Monday, six."
Nestor answered inside a minute: "Of course. Thank you for keeping it safe."
On Monday morning the brass instrument sat on a clean rag in the middle of my workbench.
Eloy stood on one side of it and I stood on the other.
He had not slept, and he hadn't shaved, and he hadn't said ten words since he came in.
Nestor walked in at six exactly with a white paper bag.
"Pan dulce from the bakery on the corner," he said, and set it on the bench. "Buenos días, Del. Eloy."
Nobody touched the bag.
He looked at the altimeter and did not reach for it.
"You turned it over," he said.
"Yes," Eloy said.
"Then I won't insult you," Nestor said. "Epifanio Armijo was my father."
