Chapter 17: The Long Dark
"Aurek," I said. "It's morning."
The dragon lifted its head off the floor of the cage.
It looked at the light.
It looked at me.
Then it hit the bars.
They were new bars, thicker than the old ones, hammered into the rock by every strong pair of arms in the Wreck Deep.
They held for six blows.
On the seventh, the whole frame came out of the ceiling.
I threw myself flat on the floor.
The dragon went over me in a rush of white and black water, so close its belly scales scraped my back.
It didn't stop for me.
It went straight up through the dock door and out into the open sea.
I lay there with grit raining down on me and the key still in my fist.
Then I was up and swimming after it.
The Wreck Deep was just waking.
Smoke curled from the kitchen vent. The net-scarred brothers were at the gate with their gear, laughing about something.
They saw the dragon come up over the hull, and the laughing stopped.
It was huge in daylight.
I'd never seen it in daylight.
I'd never seen it outside the cage in either life.
