Chapter 22: The Savior

For a moment nobody in the Tide Circle made a sound.

Then a lady at the north stone began to clap.

Then another.

Then the whole court was cheering, a roar that rolled off the twelve stones and up toward the red moon.

"The Blessed!"

"She took the beast out of him!"

"She saved the reef!"

Isveth turned slowly in the middle of the circle, glowing, with her arms held out to them.

She was laughing.

I held Aurek against my chest on the coiled stone.

He was heavy in my arms in a way he'd never been. Like a sack of wet sand.

"Can you swim?" I said.

"I don't know." He moved his tail. It worked. "I think so. It's strange. Everything's strange."

The spear captain had come up off the seabed with blood coming out of his nose.

He pointed at Brannoch.

"The Ember Lord struck me! Inside the circle! Under the queen's law!"

Brannoch was floating in the middle of four lowered spears with his fists still balled.

"I did," he said. "I'll do it again. That woman's been poisoning me since our wedding night."
