Chapter 30: Ten
Aurek came across the meadow so fast he swam straight through a bundle of kelp.
He stopped in front of me with green blades stuck in his hair.
"A clutch," he said.
"Yes."
"But the crown. You said in the other life it was the crown that..."
"The curse made the line barren," I said. "Not the crown. The witch said so. The curse is gone."
"It's gone," he repeated.
He put his hand over mine on my belly.
He couldn't feel anything yet. I knew that.
He kept it there anyway.
Then he started to laugh, and then he wasn't laughing.
He put his forehead down on my shoulder in the middle of the Shallows with half the Wreck Deep watching.
By evening every soul in the city knew.
The old nurse made a cake.
Corwen got drunk on sea-grape wine and sang.
Brannoch heard about it two days later and swam all the way from the Ember Trench to hug Aurek so hard he cracked a rib.
Everyone was happy.
I was terrified.
I didn't tell anyone.
I smiled at the cake. I let Corwen sing. I let Brannoch hug me too, carefully.
Then at night I lay awake in the great cabin with my hand on my belly and my eyes on the black windows.
I saw the long table in the Ember Trench.
