Chapter 23: Mother
She was gone from the doorway before I reached the aisle.
I found her in the church's underground garage, standing beside her car with her keys in her hand.
It was the same kind of concrete and the same kind of light.
Six weeks ago she had slapped me in a garage exactly like this one.
She didn't look at my face, and she didn't lift her hand.
"I'm leaving," she said. "I only wanted to see it."
"See what?"
"That you stood up in front of them." She turned the keys over. "The partners voted this morning. Eleven to nothing."
"On what?"
"Removal." She said it flatly. "I resigned an hour before they could. I'd like it noted that I got there first."
"That's what you want noted."
"It's what I have."
Behind me the elevator opened.
Keir stepped out, stopped at a distance of ten feet, and didn't come closer.
My mother saw him, and the keys went still.
"Mr. Stroud."
"Counselor."
"I owe you," she began.
"You owe her."
"Yes." Her voice thinned. "I know who I owe."
She reached into her handbag and took out a folded packet of papers.
She put it in my hand.
"What is it?"
"My statement. I went to the district attorney at eight this morning, after I left the firm. It says what I did, who asked me, and what I paid." She breathed in. "It also says I have been wrong for fourteen years."
I looked at the staple in the corner.
"My lawyer says I will lose my license," she said. "She says I may lose more. I'm told I'm not entitled to a deal."
