She Stole My Wolf, So I Rejected the Alpha novel · Chapter 11 of 24

Chapter 11: Father

"Trespass," Garth said, to the crowd on the stairs. "Assault on two of my hunters. And theft."

He pointed at the ledger under Merrick's arm.

"That book is the property of this hall."

A low mutter ran through the wolves behind him.

I stepped out from behind Merrick. "Then let's read it."

"Briony."

"In front of everyone." I held out my hand, and Merrick hesitated, then gave me the book.

I opened it on the first page I could find and held it up to the nearest torch.

"Read it yourselves," I said, loud enough for the stairwell to hear. "Every line ends the same way."

Silence.

A woman in the front row put her hand over her mouth.

"That's my cousin's name," she said. "They told us she took ill."

"Forgery," Garth said at once. "A rogue's trick."

"Whose handwriting is it?" asked a gray-haired man at the stairs.

"It's a forgery."

"It's yours." The man walked down two steps with his torch lifted. "I've seen your hand on the Cleansing lists for thirty years, Alpha. That's your hand."

Garth's smile stretched.

Merrick moved into the torchlight.

He did not hurry. He walked to the middle of the room, by the pit, and turned to face the stairs.
