She Stole My Wolf, So I Rejected the Alpha novel · Chapter 20 of 24

Chapter 20: Freely Given

The torch fell end over end, spitting sparks, toward the packed wolfsbane at my feet.

"No," Lorna said.

She said it out loud, in her own cracked voice, and the whole yard heard it.

Garth's head snapped toward her.

"Lorna. Now light the rest. Finish it."

"No." She was shaking so hard her chain rattled. "I dropped it because you told me to. I'm done doing what you tell me."

"You will do as I say."

"I know what I did." Her eyes were wet and gold and furious. "I know what you did. And I know whose wolf this is."

She pressed both hands to her ribs.

"Bri," she said. "I give her back."

"Say it so he can't pretend he didn't hear," I said.

My sister drew a breath that came from the soles of her feet.

"I, Lorna Oakes, give my sister's wolf back to her. Freely. With no price and no trade." She was screaming it now. "She isn't mine. She never was. Take her!"

The gold light erupted from her chest.

It tore out of her.

I felt it hit me.

The silver in my hand blazed white, and the world turned into the sound of one enormous howl.

My wolf came home.

She did not slam into me this time, the way she had in the cellar. She came up through the floor of me, through my knees, my spine, the roots of my teeth.

I screamed and she screamed with me.

Every smell in the yard opened at once. Smoke, sweat, wet wool, fear, the iron taste of blood from the hunters on the ground.
