Chapter 17: The Guest Wing
My lawyer called it the worst order she'd seen all year.
"An appeal takes months," she said on the phone. "Friday is Friday."
"Then I'll be there on Friday."
"Clem, the order doesn't say you go."
"It doesn't say I don't."
There was a long pause on the line.
"I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that," she said, "so I can use it later."
At five on Friday I packed a duffel bag.
Diapers, bottles, Margo's yellow sleep sack, my own toothbrush, three days of clothes.
The probie stood in the doorway watching.
"I could fit in that bag," he said.
"You could not."
"I could fit in a smaller bag."
Cormac drove us to Brookline with Margo's seat in the back and his jaw set.
He stopped at the bottom of the drive, outside the gate.
"I'll have my phone on all weekend," he said. "I mean on. In my hand. In the shower."
I kissed him, quick and hard, and got out.
Bradford opened the front door himself at six exactly.
He looked at the car seat, then at the duffel bag.
"The order is for Margo," he said.
"I read it."
"You're not staying."
"You told me in the hospital that legally I'm still your wife." I set the bag down on his marble floor. "You were right. A wife lives in her husband's house. I'll take the guest wing."
Behind him, in the front hall, the housekeeper stopped dusting a lamp.
Valerie was halfway down the stairs in a pink robe with her son on her shoulder.
She stopped too.
Bradford looked at all three of us.
"There's a nursery ready," he said. "Brand new. I had it done for her."
"Good for you. She sleeps with me."
"The court gave me the weekend."
"The court gave you the house. I'm in the house." I picked up Margo's seat. "Unless you want to call the police again. On a Friday night, in front of the neighbors, to throw your wife out of her own front door. With the papers watching you."
