Chapter 19: Croup
I set the stack of bills down on the counter.
"You told me," I said. "In the hospital. 'I put sleeping pills in your water glass.' Those were your words."
"I know what I said."
"So which time were you lying?"
He looked at the floor.
"She told me the next morning that you'd taken something to sleep," he said. "Wedding nerves. I believed her. At the hospital I said I did it because I'd rather you think I was in charge of that night than a fool in it."
"You'd rather be a man who drugs his wife than a man who got played."
He didn't answer.
That was an answer.
Out front, the hose stopped.
Through the window I could see the lieutenant watching us, very still, with the nozzle pointed at the gutter.
"Then say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"What you just told me. To my lawyer. On paper. Signed. That Valerie dropped the pills in my glass and told you a lie about it the next morning."
"Clementine."
"You came here to say it. So say it where it counts."
Bradford's hand moved to his tie, then stopped.
"If I sign a statement that I slept with another woman beside my wife while my wife was drugged," he said, "the trust's conduct clause takes the chair from me the same afternoon."
"So that's the price."
"That's the price."
"And it's too high."
He looked at me, and there was something almost tired in his face.
"I've wanted that chair since I was twelve," he said. "I got it the day I married you."
"You were good at laughing for a while," I said. "I taught you. Get out of my bakery."
He went.
The lieutenant came in and put the hose nozzle on my counter.
"Want me to go knock on his car window?"
"No."
"Want me to want to?"
"Yes."
"Done," he said, and went back out.
