Chapter 12: Last Glass

We drove to the house first.

The guest room closet was open and empty.

The lockbox was gone, and so was the grey hoodie from the hook on the door.

On the dresser stood one framed photo, left behind.

It showed two twelve-year-old girls on a dock in summer, laughing, with their arms around each other.

I turned it face down.

"Where would she go?" Seth asked from the doorway.

I knew before he finished the sentence.

"The Point."

"Harlow Point?"

"She hated the lodge, and she hated the house. But we used to sit on my grandmother's dock every August. It's the only place she ever said she felt like a person."

We took Seth's truck down the old shore road with the headlights off for the last quarter mile.

The Point was a long, dark finger of pines and rock reaching into the lake.

At the end of it stood my grandmother's dock, bleached silver by the moon.

A small figure sat at the very end with her feet over the water.

Seth stopped the truck, and I got out before he could stop me.

"Emme," he said. "Let me go first."

"She won't talk to you."

"She won't talk to anyone."

"She'll talk to me."

I walked down the boards alone.

They creaked under my shoes, loud in the quiet.

Kit didn't turn around.

She had the grey hoodie on, and the lockbox sat open beside her.

A bottle of white wine stood on the planks, half empty, and next to it a single stemmed glass.
